Synopsis

Mirrors, fine linen and china, or silk have made France the renowned nation of luxury.

However, before the Sun King, France was importing everything at a dear price from Venice, China, the Netherlands, Bavaria and Prussia as well as from England.

The notion of Luxury à la française, as we picture it today, was conceived by Louis XIV, as a response to economic crisis. In the 17th and 18th century, the ingenuity of the king and his advisors started a new era: new ways of trading, technical and scientific innovations, new financing systems…

The need for “excellence” was promoted by any means: Venetian mirror masters were bribed, English weavers kidnapped…. Find out how the Sun King and Colbert made France the First Nation of Luxury goods, sometimes through relatively unscrupulous ways
